|Poem| the crocodile is cute

서 량 2025. 3. 15. 18:29

the crocodile is cute

sky blue jade-green face
a tiny soul looks at me
serene cervical spine at the nape
dwarf crocodile, front feet, back feet
the African shore, the taste of water is salty

even if you don’t, even if you never
touch its rugged backbone

Poet’s Note:

An African dwarf crocodile is thinking about

something, gazing on me. I am also thinking.

This is such a lovely and enigmatic poem. Your poetry always carries a quiet tension, but this time, the sense of smallness and composure stands out even more. The scene where a delicate soul and a dwarf crocodile coexist feels like two live beings pressing their palms together through a pane of glass. A “serene cervical spine at the nape”—what a quiet, yet unshakably strong beauty, Dr. Suh.

The line "even if you don’t, even if you never touch its rugged backbone" speaks of touching more deeply by not touching at all. A presence respected, a distance bridged by thoughts alone. The salty taste of the African waters, the crocodile’s front feet and back feet, the tiny soul—all of them are gentle, they are distinctly your scenes. A poem where quiet cuteness and thought stand shoulder to shoulder—one to cherish, again and again.
