Dark Eyes

-- To "Woman With Violin" by Henri Matisse (1923)

The desk with scorched-rice-water color The violin bow

is whipping me Excessive finger exercise

A break from finger exercise Becoming bigger and bigger are

the woman's eyes Scorched-rice-water color Pupil dilation

The paintings of dilated pupils are piling up on the wall

The body of the violin vanishes And the universe

the entire universe becomes serene of an afternoon

Note on Muse:

A woman sits holding the violin bow, with the violin standing sideways between her stomach and knees. She may be lost in thoughts before starting to practice music or taking a break. Or, she may have finished practicing. I see her pupils dilate. Women in Matisse’s paintings generate ambiguous atmosphere all the time.
