Mirror on the Wall
-- To the woman in the painting “Meditation” by Matisse (1920)
Looking down
Eyes open, widely open
Body emanating light, newborn chicken-yellow light
A warm place, in the very warm place
Human shape spreading bright yellow light
Right hand clenched, left hand defenseless
Woman snapping out of a dark mirror in no time
Note on the Muse:
Women in Matisse's paintings are often sitting with a wall mirrors behind them.
Sometimes I get a feeling the woman just popped out of the mirror.
