Close-up
-- To “Reading Woman, Daydreaming” by Matisse (1921)
Crimson walls, white dresser
There’s a lonesome flower vase by the book with neat black stripes
Tightly fitting in the black boots, the woman's tightly fitting feet
An oval mirror magnifies the side of her head many times over
With her head tilted
I see her gaze falling into a daydream, a distinct gaze
Note on Muse:
When it comes to Matisse's picture featuring a woman, there's always a story. A sparkling story that you can tell without any knowledge of a person! The amusement of expressing the moment with a brush of language as if drawing a picture is more than an amusement.
